Hird Therapy

~Where You'll Be Heard~

Being neurodivergent can bring many strengths, but it can also come with challenges that are not always visible to others. Difficulties with focus, organisation, emotional regulation, self-esteem, relationships, sensory overwhelm, masking, or feeling different can have a significant impact on daily life.

As a neurodivergent therapist, I understand that people do not all think, communicate, learn, process emotions, or experience the world in the same way. I offer a neurodiversity-affirming space where clients can explore their experiences without judgement, shame, or pressure to fit a particular mould.

Reasons to seek support

Therapy does not have to look the same for everyone. Some people prefer traditional talking therapy, while others find it easier to think through ideas visually, creatively, or while moving. Alongside conversation, I may use creative counselling techniques, visual aids, Lego®, therapeutic cards, sand tray work, pebbles, games, or walk-and-talk sessions where appropriate. Together, we can find an approach that works for you.

FAQ's

Do I need a diagnosis to access counselling?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis of ADHD, autism, or any other neurodivergent condition to access counselling. Many people come to therapy because they are exploring whether neurodiversity may be part of their experience.

Do you work with ADHD?

Yes. I welcome clients with ADHD and understand that challenges can include focus, organisation, emotional regulation, self-esteem, overwhelm, relationships, and feeling misunderstood.

Do you work with autistic clients?

Yes. I welcome autistic clients and aim to provide a neurodiversity-affirming environment that respects different communication styles, sensory needs, and ways of experiencing the world.

What does neurodiversity-affirming mean?

Neurodiversity-affirming means recognising that neurological differences are a natural part of human diversity. Rather than viewing neurodivergence as something to be "fixed," therapy focuses on understanding your experiences, strengths, challenges, and needs.

I struggle to put my thoughts into words. Can counselling still help?

Absolutely. Not everyone finds it easy to express themselves through conversation alone. Where appropriate, I can incorporate creative approaches such as visual aids, Lego®, therapeutic cards, sand tray work, pebbles, and walk-and-talk therapy.

What if I forget what I wanted to talk about?

That is completely okay. Many neurodivergent clients worry about this. Sessions are flexible, and we can work together to find ways of capturing thoughts, ideas, and topics as they arise.

I often feel overwhelmed by my emotions. Can counselling help?

Many neurodivergent people experience emotional overwhelm, burnout, anxiety, rejection sensitivity, or difficulties regulating emotions. Counselling can provide a space to understand these experiences and develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion.

Will I be judged for masking or struggling with everyday tasks?

No. Therapy is a space where you can be yourself without pressure to meet expectations or hide aspects of who you are. Many clients find relief in having a space where they do not need to mask, perform, or explain themselves.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. I offer online counselling, in-person sessions, and walk-and-talk therapy, allowing us to find an approach that feels comfortable and accessible for you.

What if I don't know where to start?

You don't need to arrive with everything worked out. Many clients come to counselling feeling confused, stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to explain what they are experiencing. We can begin wherever feels right for you.
